BMW Group builds mobility of the future in Leipzig

€ 400 million investment in Megacity Vehicle production
BMW Group to create 800 jobs
Munich. The mobility of the future is under construction in Leipzig. The BMW Group is expanding its plant in Leipzig to make it the first location in Germany equipped to handle the large-scale production of zero-emission electric cars. In the period up to 2013, around €400 million will be invested at the plant in new buildings and machinery for the production of the Megacity Vehicle (MCV). Some 800 jobs will be created in the process. Eco-friendly and economical Bosch CNG systems for commercial vehicles Dual-fuel operation with natural gas and diesel

· Engine control units and injection valves for CNG drives
· Up to 25 percent reduction in CO2 emissions
· Low operating costs and low emissions
Gasoline and diesel engines that can also be powered by natural gas are becoming increasingly important in the commercial-vehicle market. CNG (compressed natural gas) is particularly eco-friendly: compared with conventional diesel engines, CNG engines emit up to 25 percent less CO2. With its systems and components for CNG drives, Bosch is adding additional clean and resource-conserving products to its portfolio for commercial vehicles. CNG is also more cost-effective than conventional fuels, and CNG drives thus offer commercial-vehicle operators the benefit of lower operating costs.

‘Greener’ than expected

The ecobalance of Li-ion rechargeable batteries for electric cars

It is not an easy task to compare the environmental effects of battery powered cars to those caused by conventionally fuelled automobiles. The degree to which manufacture, usage and disposal of the batteries used to store the necessary electrical energy are detrimental to the environment is not exactly known.
Now, for the first time, a team of Empa scientists have made a detailed life cycle assessment (LCA) or ecobalance of lithium-ion (Li-ion) batteries, in particular the chemically improved (i.e. more environmentally friendly) version of the ones most frequently used in electric vehicles.
The investigation shows that if the power used to charge the battery is not derived from purely …
